Located on the East Coast of Malaysia, Pulau Perhentian isn’t that difficult to get to from cities like Kuala Lumpur, though you’ll have to take a plane or bus, and catch a speedboat to get there. Here’s a simplified guide on getting to Pulau Perhentian:
- First, get to Kuala Besut, a small town in Terengganu where boats depart to Pulau Perhentian daily. To get here, you can catch a plane or bus to Terengganu (which will take approximately one hour and seven hours from KL respectively) then make your way to the jetty.
- Hop on a speedboat to Pulau Perhentian from the Kuala Besut jetty – the boat journey takes approximately 40 minutes and costs RM35 for an adult ticket. There are boats every hour from 8AM – 5PM and tickets can be purchased over the counter or pre-booked online!
Pulau Perhentian is composed of two main islands: Perhentian Kecil which offers plenty of budget accommodation and cheap food options, and Perhentian Besar, which is popular amongst families and couples, offering a range of mid-range to luxury resorts.
You can easily travel between the two islands via a short water taxi ride though, so it doesn’t really matter where you decide to stay – both are equally good options and it just depends on what you’re looking for.
